Now, this might seem like an odd question. Don’t I know what he’s called? Or what he was originally called?
We know that his mother called him ‘Larry’. So we can assume that’s true. But as for ‘Klempner’? Where does that come from?
We know that he changes identities to suit his purpose. So, we have no reason to suppose that Klempner was ever his real name.
In fact, Charlotte once asked him. Perhaps you recall this conversation from when she visited him in prison (Taken from The Loss Of Innocence).
*****
After another long pause, Klempner says, “Are you going to ask me about your mother? That’s what you usually do.”
Charlotte fidgets then blurts, “I don’t even know what to call you.”
Klempner blows air. Looks down. Looks up. Then, “I suppose Dad is too much to hope for?”
James huffs and Klempner levels a stare at him. Then, “What do you want to call me?”
Charlotte’s voice would cut glass. “Don’t tempt me.”
He coughs a laugh with no humour in it. “They know me as Larry around here. You can call me Larry.”
“What’s your real name?”
“What?” He seems genuinely taken aback by the question.
She repeats. “What’s your real name? I don’t think it’s Klempner. I think you’ve probably gone by a lot of names. In a lot of places.”
He shrugs. “You’re right. I have. If you mean my original name. I left that behind when I was fourteen. Klempner works as well as anything else. Klempner will do.”
“And Larry?”
His lids lower. “That was what my mother called me.”
“Your mother?”
“Yes, I did have one you know.”
*****
You know something of Klempner’s past; the kind of man he is, how he became what he is: his abusive childhood, the murder of his mother, the killing of his own father in self-defence followed by his later life as a mercenary and then trafficker.
What do you think his name originally was? His real name? You can take ‘Lawrence’ for granted. What’s the rest? Name and surname. Perhaps more than one first name. And feel free to say why you think so.
If I use your entry in a future book (no spoilers lol!), you will receive a prize of the complete series of ‘The Master’s Child’.
… The book in which the information is revealed will be dedicated to you.
